Tips & ideas for engagement photography sessions

Hello beautiful people,

Like all of our brides, Emily {pictured below} asked what to wear and what to bring to her engagement photography session. I have typed my enthusiastic tips and ideas up in many individual emails by now and really think it's time to collect them all in a little post for you here. For those of you who are still undecided on what to plan for your engagement session, I have also added tips for things to bring and save-the-date ideas. If you would like me to explain anything in more detail or add any other points, hit the 'Send us your questions...' button or leave us a note in the comments section!

WHAT TO WEAR

This is a big one and among your most frequently asked questions, so below are some tips that can guide your decision-making process. However, if you happen to be among those few lucky ones who have a stellar personal style and who know what to wear for any occasion, please rock your own style for your photos and show us what you've got. After all, being yourself is the best outfit there is.

LADIES:

You know best what colours and styles look flattering on you, so wear that dress that makes you feel amazing each time you're out and about in it. If you can't think of a dress like that, try to think which dress your fiancé/e and friends always compliment you on whenever they see you in it. If your darling is smitten by you wearing your happy dress, his or her admiring looks will look extra sweet in your photos.

♡

PEACHY COLOURS & WHITE CLASSICS

Colours: Because our engagement sessions are mostly happening surrounded by greenery or the beach, colours that we would recommend are beige, peach (colour pop!), aqua, turquoise, plum, navy, yellow (not for everyone, I know!) or, the classic: white. Considering that the gents are often wearing toned-down colours, there is really no reason not to go for a colour pop for your choice of outfit!

♡

TEXTURE IS GOOD

Textures: Clothes that have a bit of texture look more interesting in photos, so if you're undecided between a dress made of a simple fabric and a dress with a textured one, go for texture.

♡

MIX IT UP AND BRING A CHANGE OF OUTFIT

Feel free to bring a change of outfit. For example, we can start in a pretty dress and then change into something more casual. The spots we shoot at are parks and beaches, which usually have bathrooms around to get changed in.

♡

BE BOLD. DARE TO WEAR THAT GROOVY DRESS

Express yourself: you will get beautiful photos of yourself and your loved one after your session. It is a great opportunity to wear something you absolutely love and feel wonderful in, regardless of whether it might be considered too quirky in an office context! We won't be at an office and where we are, there is no judgement within a 100 mile radius, so if you have a fantastically fun outfit in your closet that you adore, but that you haven't dared to wear, bring it and rock it. You can always bring a second outfit to change into for some more photos, but we encourage you to radically wear what makes you happy. I know every lady has an outfit like that in the closet, whether it's a gorgeous vintage dress or a Vivienne Westwood one-off from a trip to New York. I want them out in the open. For your self-expression and for the uniqueness of the photos we will get.

GENTS:

Comfort is key. If you have any outfits that tick some of the points below, then go for it. While an engagement session is a nice excuse to go shopping, you really don't have to.

♡

BLUE + BROWN + BEIGE/WHITE

Colours that always work are combinations of the following:

Any shade of blue (denim, baby blue, navy) + any shade of brown (chocolate, caramel, camel) + any shade of white/beige

Whether your engagement session is in a lush dark green rainforest or on a beach at sunrise with a pastel-hued background, the above-listed colour combinations will do their magic to make your photos look fabulous.

♡

AVOID BIG LABELS & TEXT ON CLOTHES

One thing to avoid is wearing big labels and large writing on your clothes (because they can make the photos look unnecessarily busy). Another thing to avoid for your engagement photography session is wearing black. Unless your engagement session is in the city at a posh setting, avoid wearing black as it can look a bit formal in natural settings like the beach or forest.

♡

BE BOLD. DARE TO WEAR YOUR HIDDEN CLOSET TREASURES

Express yourself: just like the ladies, I absolutely encourage you to wear your secret closet fashion treasures, if you have! They are your photos and can be as toned down or colourful as you like.

WHAT TO BRING ALONG FOR YOUR ENGAGEMENT PHOTO SESSION

Frankly, you don't need to bring anything to your engagement photography session to get beautiful and timeless photos. Especially if you're preparing your wedding, the last thing you need is a long shopping list for a simple engagement session, so the things listed here are simply for those who want to spice it up a bit:

♡

CONFETTI!

Confetti! Need I say more? Lark Store has Jumbo Confetti! Just sayin'... Click here to have a look.

♡

DIY FLOWER CONES FOR PETALS TO THROW

Flower petals in DIY cones to throw for a photo. Simply roll some A4 sheets into a cone shape, tape together to hold in place and fill with petals - tadaaa!

♡

SAVE-THE-DATE ACCESSORIES

Save-the-date accessories: planning to use your engagement photos for save-the-date cards? Awesome. A fun project could be to prepare a wooden sign with your wedding date written on it with paint. You can both hold the sign for a photo. (Or your dog can. Everything is better with dogs). You can also bring a picture frame or chalk board along. If you have hand-lettering angst because your chalk board is empty - fear not! We can write something pretty for you, just bring one of those chalk markers along (and wipes... we're not perfect).

♡

DEFINITELY BRING YOUR DOG

Bring your dog. If you have one in your family, by all means, please bring it along and make our day. We have a husky ourselves and know how to dog-whisper.

♡

HICKS!

Champagne is never misplaced at a sunset engagement session

♡

PARTY LEFTOVERS

Giant balloons, bubbles, fake moustaches... the options are endless.

♡

PROPOSAL MEMORIES

Some couples like to re-tell the story of their proposal for their engagement session, or parts thereof, if they didn't get to capture any photos during the real proposal. Feel free to bring along items that symbolise your love story or proposal: totally optional, but if there is anything you would like to incorporate in your photos, bring it. Don't think we need to mention it but... bring your engagement ring.
