Just a few doors down the road from us, Northside Meetings and The Letter Lounge opened its doors this March for all things coffee, food and art, particularly writing. The building they are in used to be a hairdresser and beauty salon. It is incredible to see what Judy and Anne-Maree have made of the space with some renovations and lot of care for detail.
My friends Matt and Lentil from Grown & Gathered inspired me to be more community-orientated and find ways to trade goods and skills with others whilst taking money out of the equation. They spent an entire year trading their own organic flowers for anything that keen Melbournians had to offer in return, be it singing lessons, homemade jam, self-knitted socks, you name it.
Last weekend I attended one of Anne-Maree's drawing lessons at Northside Meetings and reconnected with my earlier days of getting lost in the drawing process - such a nice place to be. I spent hours perfecting my sketch of some tomatoes and got to sample coffees, amazing homemade scones and Chantilly creme, all part of Anne-Maree's art class. To return the favour, I snapped some photos of her class that the friendly folks from Northside Meetings can use for their business. It felt really lovely being part of such an exchange and I think I will seek out such experiences more when they offer themselves.
What skill or goods do you have in abundance that you can trade? Would love to hear about it.
